When I was still in college, I had a belief that I felt a little embarrassed now for women, accidental one night hookup is essentially negative and shameful. Many conservative commentators share the same feelings. I also want to read their books and articles. I think they have confirmed my own feelings and experiences.
Looking back now, I can understand why I think so: I think casual tinder hookup is shameful, because every time I have this kind of behavior, I feel shameful.
But I later realized that the reason I felt degraded was not because casual one night hookup itself. This is because my hook up partner treats me as an object and acts as a means to an end. They don't care about my happiness, they don't respect me, they don't care about me later, and they are often aggressive.
The more I know about feminism, the more I realize that my experience of engaging in casual hookup with men is consistent with a broader pattern of structural gender discrimination. They treat me this way because they treat women like this, not just in the case of hookups and they treat women like this because they grow up in a sexual-discriminating society like us.
Unfortunately, despite many real and important criticisms of how the culture of hookup works, many of the criticisms we hear most often come from sexual negation and fear of young people's sexual behavior.
Through their whispers and their failure to look at the culture of feminism, these critics reveal the fact that they ultimately believe that random behaviors of people, especially young people, especially young women, are immoral and annoying.
Well, it is not. The problem we see in hookup culture is not because it involves casual sexual encounters, but because it involves gender discrimination and gender discrimination is deeply rooted in our society.
Of course, hookup culture is gender discrimination. This is gender discrimination, just as serious relationships are gender discrimination, television shows are sexist, and workplaces are gender discriminatory as well.
In order to completely eliminate gender discrimination from the hookup culture, we must completely remove it from society. This is a difficult task for now. We can still do something to make our hookups less sexist and more empowered.
For example, when you are looking for a one night hookup, try to judge those men who treat women like sexual object only to satisfy their sexual needs. Just do not let them get their way. Also, you need to spread this idea to your female and male friends, starting from now. A small action makes a great difference. Before you know it, your idea has been spread for a thousand mile away. That is the greatness of words. They travel fast.
